Alain Karaoglan is chief operating officer (COO) for Voya Financial, Inc. (NYSE: VOYA), which helps Americans plan, invest and protect their savings — to get ready to retire better. Serving the financial needs of approximately 13.6 million individual and institutional customers in the United States, Voya is a Fortune 500 company that had $11 billion in revenue in 2016. The company had $517 billion in total assets under management and administration as of June 30, 2017.
Karaoglan is responsible for all of Voya’s ongoing business, which includes the Annuities, Employee Benefits, Individual Life, Investment Management and Retirement segments. He is responsible for the profitability and growth of the business — and is focused on aligning the five segments to support Voya’s growth strategy and ensure the company operates as a customer-centric organization. He also oversees Brand and Corporate Communications, Corporate Marketing, Corporate Development, Strategic Relationship Management and the Customer Solutions Group. Karaoglan also serves on Voya’s Executive Committee.
In addition to serving as COO, prior to this role, Karaoglan was also CEO, Retirement and Investment Solutions, with oversight of the company’s Retirement, Annuities and Investment Management businesses. He has been a key driver of Voya’s transformation and value creation leading up to and following its initial public offering in May 2013. Under his leadership, Voya has completed a number of cultural, operational and financial improvements that have driven greater value for the company’s stakeholders. Karaoglan joined Voya as executive vice president, Strategy and Finance, in April 2011.
Karaoglan has more than 30 years of investment banking, equity research and corporate experience. Prior to joining Voya, he was senior vice president, Divestiture, for AIG. He joined AIG at a critical time during its global restructuring. Spearheading the Divestiture team, he managed over 40 transactions, including the IPO of AIA, a pan-Asian life insurance company, and the sale of Alico (American Life Insurance Company) to MetLife.
Prior to AIG, Karaoglan was managing director, Equity Research, for Banc of America Securities LLC. He was a team leader for Financial Services Equity Research, composed of 26 professionals covering investment banks, commercial banks, asset managers, consumer finance and REITs. For seven years prior, he was managing director, North American Equity Research, at Deutsche Bank Securities Inc. Previously, he had transitioned into equity research at Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette after being in investment banking for approximately 10 years at The First Boston Corporation and Bear Stearns, where he advised companies in corporate finance and M&A transactions.
Karaoglan received bachelor’s degrees, magna cum laude, in business administration and economics from Pepperdine University, and received his Master of Business Administration from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He is a member of the Board of Trustees for Scholarship America, a member of the Board of Governors for Investment Company Institute (ICI), and an executive designee for Financial Services Roundtable (FSR).
